Eric Leong’s Radical 2015 Toyota Prius Design Study

As part of last year’s Toyota Design Internship, industrial designer Eric Leong produced this interesting take on the third-generation Toyota Prius for the year 2015.

By acknowledging that wind resistance is one of the key factors in improving vehicle economy, Leong’s Prius III hybrid is extremely slippery. Described by the designer as moving, “through [the wind], not into it”, this design study channels air over its surface through a series of vanes.

And there are some nice little design touches as well such as the wraparound glasshouse, one-piece windscreen and roof and the transparent wing mirror arms / turn indicators.

There’s something about this design study; it reminds me of ItalDesign’s concepts of the 1980s and 1990s. You can check out our gallery of images below or leave a comment if you wish.

Three Toyotas latest to earn IIHS Top Safety Picks




The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just announced that a total of three new Toyota vehicles have been given Top Safety Pick awards. Both the 2011 Toyota Avalon and 2011 Toyota Sienna were awarded the institute's highest ratings in front, side, rollover and rear crash tests. The 2010 Lexus RX also nabbed a Top Safety Pick nod. All of the vehicles come with electronic stability control as standard equipment – another parameter for receiving the award.



Toyota's Sienna earns the honor of being the first minivan to receive the Top Safety Pick since the IIHS added rollover data to its list of crash criteria in 2010. The news is likely to come as music to the ears of Toyota engineers and dealers, both of which have had to stand by and watch their brand's quality and safety reputation erode under a hail of recalls. Thanks for the tip, Eddie!

Since the first generation of Toyota RAV4 (Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel-Drive) was launched in Europe in 1994, over one million customers have come to appreciate its compactness, manoeuvrability and versatility, allied to the dependability of the most advanced four-wheel drive system in the segment.

Though the compact SUV share of the European market has remained steady at just below 5% of total vehicle sales, the segment has recently attracted a new group of customers for whom an SUV purchase represents a more emotional than rational proposition.

These customers still value the high driving position, interior roominess, versatility and sense of security a compact SUV provides, but have less requirement for 4WD. Rather, they place more emphasis on distinctive, sophisticated styling, premium quality interior design and fuel efficient, environmentally-friendly performance combined with an engaging driving experience. Making its European debut at this year's Geneva motor show, the new, expanded Toyota RAV4 model range fulfils each of these demands while sacrificing none of the core values of Toyota's compact SUV.

Instantly identifying it as the latest addition to the Toyota family, the Toyota RAV4 features a new, more sophisticated, chromeaccented front design, emphasising the vehicle's wide track and stable stance.

Showcasing Toyota's unique Easy Flat seating system, the Toyota RAV4 interior retains all the practical, flexible versatility its active lifestyle customers have come to expect from the compact SUV, while perceived quality is further improved by the availability of new leather/Alcantara seat upholstery.

Offering an expanded range of 2WD and 4WD variants, the entire Toyota RAV4 engine line-up benefits from Toyota Optimal Drive technologies, resulting in low emissions and fuel consumption. The 4WD variant returns class-leading emissions and fuel consumption, both for Multidrive S and manual transmission versions of the 2.0 litre Valvematic petrol engine, as well as manual and automatic 2.2 D-4D 150 diesel models.

The Toyota RAV4 range offers customers greater flexibility in selecting their ideal grade and powertrain combination. The four grades -UP1, UP2, Leather/Alcantara and Premium- are now available with a wider choice of engines.

Sophisticated exterior design with refined interior quality

Successive Toyota RAV4 generations have followed the same groundbreaking, 'Modern Rugged' design cues that created the compact SUV market with the launch of Toyota's first RAV4 in 1994. The key attributes of compactness, manoeuvrability and versatility allied to the most advanced four-wheel drive system in its segment have earned the Toyota RAV4 a consistently high share of the European compact SUV market.

Sacrificing none of these core values, the Toyota RAV4 is designed to appeal to a new group of customers who further demand distinctive, sophisticated styling with refined, premium-quality interior design.

Exterior design

The latest generation of Toyota's dynamic, compact SUV features an all new, more sophisticated front design which combines stylish, urban-chic aesthetics with the image of durability expected from a vehicle with its class-leading four-wheel drive credentials.

A new wider, horizontal bar-type radiator grille design reminiscent of the Verso and Avensis instantly identifies the Toyota RAV4 as the latest addition to the Toyota family. It is framed by new headlights, incorporating projector-type low beam lamps, which are integrated into a new bonnet and front wing design which emphasis the car's wide track and dynamic posture.

A new, full-width, aerodynamically styled front bumper accentuates the compact SUV's stable stance. The addition of chrome accents to the radiator grille, bonnet moulding and fog lamp surrounds reinforce the premium quality of the new design.

In profile, the Toyota RAV4 inherits the combination of spaceefficient packaging, rising belt-line and distinctive silhouette that has hallmarked successive generations of Toyota's compact SUV. To the rear, flanked by prominent, high-visibility Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lamp clusters, the side hung back door is deeply indented into the rear bumper, providing a practical, flat and level access step to the interior loadspace. The back door features an integral roof spoiler which houses the high-mounted, LED stop light.

The Toyota RAV4 will be available in a choice of ten body colours, including three new to the model range: Pearl White, Dark Steel and Regency Red.

Interior design

The crisp precision of the Toyota RAV4's interior reinforces the premium quality of Toyota's compact SUV. The elimination of any break lines, the tight panel gaps and the matching of surface levels highlight its engineering excellence and contribute to the perceived quality of the design.

And the perceived quality of the Toyota RAV4's interior is further improved by the availability of new leather/Alcantara seat upholstery.

Thanks to Toyota's unique, Easy Flat seating system, the Toyota RAV4 retains all the practical, flexible versatility its active lifestyle customers have come to expect from the compact SUV. Using one of two one-touch levers, easily accessible from the back door, the rear seats can be folded down flush with the loadspace floor without the need to remove any seat cushions or headrests.

Toyota Optimal Drive Applied to the entire engine line-up

Sports Utility Vehicles are under increasing pressure to improve their environmental performance. Reinforcing Toyota's lead in environmentally-friendly, sustainable mobility, the entire Toyota RAV4 engine line-up benefits from Toyota Optimal Drive, a range of technologies introduced at the 2008 Paris motor show.

Toyota Optimal Drive showcases a combination of wide-ranging advanced technologies and internal improvement programmes designed to optimise the balance of performance and driving enjoyment with fuel economy and low emissions.

These diverse core technologies focus on three key aspects of powertrain development: firstly, the reduction of powertrain weight through the use of super-lightweight and highly compact engine components and transmissions; secondly, the minimisation of friction and mechanical losses; and thirdly, the maximisation of combustion efficiency.

Equipped with Toyota Optimal Drive, the Toyota RAV4 engine range offers an unmatched balance between outstanding, front- and fourwheel drive performance and class-leading CO2 emissions in both petrol and diesel variants.

2.0 litre Valvematic petrol engine

Available in 2WD with a six-speed manual gearbox, and with Toyota's 4WD Integrated Active Drive System mated to six-speed manual or Multidrive S transmissions, the 1987cc, 4-cylinder Valvematic engine develops 158 DIN hp/116 kW at 6200 rpm and 198 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm.

When equipped with 2WD and manual transmission, the unit delivers a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 10.2 seconds and a maximum speed of 185 km/h.

Mated to 4WD and manual transmission, the engine offers 0-100 km/h acceleration in 10.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 185 km/h. Multidrive S transmission delivers 0-100 km/h acceleration in 11.0 seconds.

Both when mated through manual transmission and Multidrive S, the 4WD version returns class-leading fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Multidrive S transmission

The 2.0 litre Valvematic engine can be equipped with the Multidrive S, Toyota's highly-advanced Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system. Delivering an infinite number of ratios through two cone-shaped pulleys and a high-strength steel belt, Multidrive S offers an incredibly smooth, seamless driving experience.

Because the CVT system maintains the most efficient engine rpm at any given vehicle speed, it combines low cruising-speed noise with high CO2 and fuel efficiency, yet can also maintain the ideal ratio to deliver peak engine power for maximum performance.

A 'Sport' button selects a more responsive, power-maximising ratio, delivering a more engaging driving experience. Multidrive S also features a sequential, manual seven-speed mode, with gear selection performed either by the gear shift lever or steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.

2.2 litre D-4D 150 diesel engine

Mated to the six-speed manual transmission, the 2.2 D-4D 150 is available with 2WD or the 4WD Integrated Active Drive System. The 2231cc unit develops 150 DIN hp/110 kW at 3600 rpm and 340 Nm of torque at 2000-2800 rpm. With a maximum speed of 190 km/h, the engine delivers a 2WD 0-100km/h acceleration time of 10.0 seconds, and 10.2 seconds with 4WD.

When mated to the six-speed automatic transmission and 4WD, the 2.2 D-4D 150 unit further benefits from Toyota's Diesel-Clean Advanced Technology (Toyota D-CAT), which incorporates a Diesel Particulate and NOx Reduction filter (DPNR). Thus equipped, the 2.2 D-4D 150 offers performance of 0-100 km/h in 10.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 185 km/h.

When mated to 4WD, the unit returns class-leading CO2 emissions, for both the manual and the automatic transmission.

Six-speed automatic transmission

The 2.2 D-4D 150's six-speed automatic transmission provides a fast, smooth response while maintaining an impressive level of comfort by eliminating harsh shift shocks. A 'Sport' mode offers a more aggressive shift pattern using AI-SHIFT Control (Artificial Intelligence Shift Control).

The new transmission also features a newly developed, 6-speed Sports Direct Shift manual override control, with gear selection in M-mode performed either by the gear shift lever or steering wheelmounted paddle shifts. M-mode offers a more sporting driving experience, with a lock-up function used from 2nd to 6th gears for as wide a range of gear ratios as possible.

6-speed Sports Direct Shift also incorporates an automatic, throttle 'blipping' function to optimise the speed and smoothness of downchanges. As with the Multidrive S transmission, drivers can also use the paddle shifts to temporarily override the automatic mode.

2.2 litre D-4D 180 diesel engine

Also equipped with Toyota's D-CAT technology and mated to a six-speed manual transmission with the 4WD Integrated Active Drive System, the powerful 2.2 D-4D 180 unit develops 177 DIN hp/130 kW at 3600 rpm and 400Nm of torque at 2000-2800 rpm. The engine delivers a performance of 0-100 km/h in 9.3 seconds and a maximum speed of 200 km/h.

The Toyota RAV4 is available with either 2WD front-wheel drive or Toyota's advanced 4WD Integrated Active Drive System (IADS). IADS is a sophisticated, high-speed interactive management system which -via sensors located throughout the vehicleintegrates the Toyota RAV4's Active Torque Control 4WD, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems to enhance the Toyota RAV4's performance, handling and safety.

The key element of IADS, the Active Torque Control 4WD system continuously monitors and controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential, optimising traction and vehicle stability under all driving conditions.

Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 55:45, with front-wheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve fuel consumption. The system incorporates a 4WD Lock button, allowing the driver to lock torque distribution in a 55:45 ratio for maximum off-road traction.

IADS coordinates the operation of the Active Torque Control 4WD system with the Toyota RAV4's VSC and EPS to not only control individual wheel speeds (as in a conventional VSC system), but also to adjust torque transfer between the front and rear wheels and add steering torque assistance to help the driver control a skid.

Exclusively designed for the European market, the Toyota Auris HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) introduces full hybrid technology to a core model at the heart of Toyota's model line-up. It marks the first step in the deployment of HSD technology across the company's entire European model range by the early 2020s.

Built in Britain at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK's Burnaston factory, it targets an important shift in customer perceptions of full hybrid drive technology.

The prospect of Britain - and Europe's - first home-manufactured full hybrid model was welcomed by the UK Government. Business Minister Ian Lucas said: "I'm delighted that Toyota has chosen its UK plants to produce the first European Toyota hybrid car and I look forward to seeing it when I'm in Geneva for the Motor Show. Toyota's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions gives fresh impetus to our vision for the UK to lead in the design, manufacture and use of low carbon cars."

Going beyond the benefits of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions that are inherent in Hybrid Synergy Drive, the new Toyota Auris HSD will deliver everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness for a smooth and sophisticated driving experience that is unlike anything else in the C-segment.

Toyota Auris HSD will be available in two levels: 89g/km and 92g/km, both offer the lowest CO2 emissions and strongest fuel economy in their class. HSD will thus play a significant role in further reducing Toyota's European whole-fleet average CO2 emissions. These have already fallen by 14g/km between 2008 and 2009 to 132g/km, thanks to the introduction of Toyota Optimal Drive technology.

Exterior design

Toyota Auris HSD adopts the new exterior styling introduced across the Auris 2010 model range, including a completely redesigned front-end. It also displays a number of model-specific features which help improve the car's aerodynamic efficiency and reference the presence of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain.

The opening in the upper front grille has been optimised to promote a smooth flow of air over the upper half of the body, and the lower grille has been made larger to reduce airflow resistance and improve engine cooling efficiency.

With a revised foglamp configuration, the flat, vertical surface of the corners of the front bumper corrects the airflow as it passes over the front wheels, helping minimise turbulence in the wheelarches.

Further improvement in aerodynamic efficiency is achieved by a ride height reduced by 5mm; purpose-designed alloy wheels with integrated aerodynamic caps; low rolling resistance tyres; and a large, roof-mounted rear spoiler. Working together to smooth and control the flow of air over the car, these HSD-specific design modifications reduce the coefficient of drag from Cd0.290 to 0.283, contributing to reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Interior design

The interior features a number of modifications, including a revised instrument binnacle in which the tachometer has been replaced by an Eco Drive Assist Monitor. The centre-dial information panel includes additional HSD-specific information such as Energy Flow and Eco Drive Result monitors.

A hybrid blue smart start button has been added to the side of the instrument cluster and the centre console incorporates switches for the Parking Control and EV, ECO and Power drive modes, and a shift-by-wire gear lever.

The illumination is changed to display greenish-white numbers on a hybrid blue background on the meter panel, audio and heating controls, and the Smart Start, Drive Mode and Parking Control switches.

A choice of upholsteries specific to the model will also be available: a blue-flecked fabric or Alcantara panels with leather surrounds.

Hybrid Synergy Drive

Toyota Auris HSD is a full hybrid capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, or a combination of both. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive system delivers the energy-saving qualities of a series hybrid, combined with the performance benefits of a parallel hybrid.

The technology delivers impressive, seamless acceleration and remarkably quiet running, with class-leading fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from 74.3mpg and 89g/km.

Toyota's latest generation Hybrid Synergy Driver uses a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine, a powerful electro motor, generator, high performance battery and a power control unit. A power split device with a planetary gear system combines and reallocated power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to the car's operational requirements.

The key to the successful installation of the system in Toyota Auris's front-engine platform is the fact the electric motor, generator and power split device are housed in a single transmission casing that is the size of a conventional gearbox. The seamless E-CVT electric continuously variable transmission is controlled by shift-by-wire technology via an electric shift lever.

The lightweight and compact four-cylinder, 1,798cc Atkinson Cycle VVT-i engine develops 97bhp at 5,200rpm and 142Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The high performance permanent magnet synchronous 60kW electric motor generates a maximum 207Nm between zero and 13,000rpm.

Powered by the hybrid battery, the electric motor works in tandem with the petrol engine to boost acceleration in normal driving. When the car is operating in EV (electric vehicle) mode, it alone powers the driven wheels.

During deceleration and under braking, the electric motor acts as a high-output generator to effect regenerative braking, recovering kinetic energy that would normally be wasted as heat for storage as electrical energy in the battery.

In combination, the petrol engine and electric motor generated a maximum system power output of 134bhp, giving performance to match a conventional 2.0-litre petrol or diesel hatchback. Conversely, Toyota Auris HSD lower CO2 emissions and significantly lower NOx emissions than diesel-powered cars of comparable performance.

Furthermore, when operating in its switchable EV mode, it cuts CO2 and NOx emissions to zero, driving for up to 1.3 miles (2km) at speeds up to 31mph (50kph), depending on the level of battery charge and driving conditions.

Toyota Auris HSD has four driving modes, including three that can be selected "on-demand" by the driver to maximise the HSD powertrain's capabilities and provide comprehensive eco driving support for those who want to adopt a more environmentally efficient style of driving.

EV mode allows for ultra-quiet running on electric motor power lone, giving zero fuel consumption and emissions. ECO mode maximises efficiency and fuel economy, and Power mode boosts system performance. In addition, an Eco Drive Monitor helps driver's maximise the HSD system's efficiency.

The driver can monitor the flow of energy around the HSD system in each mode, via the multi-information display in the instrument panel, which helps promote an easy, fuel-efficient driving technique. There is also a clear and simple power consumption gauge that shows how much power is being used or generated at any given time.

Taking advantage of the inherent quietness of Hybrid Synergy Drive, Toyota has paid special attention to NVH reduction measures to create a calm and quiet cabin environment at all speeds. Road and engine noise have been rigorously suppressed with extensive use of sound-proofing materials. Full-thickness glazing and a multi-layer acoustic windscreen further reduce noise for quieter performance at cruising speeds.

On sale throughout Europe from early spring, the Toyota Auris 2010 will continue to appeal to those who prize the peace of mind offered by these core, family hatchback values. However, the revised model will also attract new customers who appreciate the marked improvements it offers in style and interior quality, its more refined driving experience and its wide choice of clean engine technologies.

With a choice of full hybrid drive, and three petrol and three diesel units offering the performance- and economy-enhancing benefits of Toyota Optimal Drive, the Toyota Auris 2010 engine line-up offers customers the most comprehensive range of powertrains in the C-segment.

The application of Toyota Optimal Drive across the Toyota Auris range in 2009 has already effected a significant improvement in the model's environmental performance, lowering CO2 emissions to segmentbest levels. Even before the 2010 introduction of Hybrid Synergy Drive to the model range, the overall Toyota Auris CO2 average has been reduced from 152 g/km in 2007 to 142 g/km in 2009.

Exclusively designed for the European market, the Toyota Auris HSD introduces full hybrid technology to a core model at the heart of the Toyota line-up, the first step in the deployment of HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive technology) across the company's entire European model range by the early 2020s. Over and above the benefits of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions inherent in Hybrid Synergy Drive, the everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness of Toyota's full hybrid powertrain will offer the Toyota Auris HSD customer a smooth and sophisticated driving experience entirely unique to the C-segment. As a result of Hybrid Synergy Drive and Toyota Optimal Drive technology, the Toyota Auris will be the first Toyota to comply with Euro 5 emission standards across the entire model range by July 2010. Toyota Optimal Drive has lowered CO2 emissions throughout the Toyota Auris 2010 engine range, with significant cost of ownership benefits to fleet customers.

With remarkably low 89 g/km CO2 emissions , the Toyota Auris HSD plays a significant role in further reducing Toyota's whole-fleet CO2 average which, having fallen by 16 g/km between 2008 and 2009, already stands at just 130 g/km.

The C-segment remains a core element of the volume market, representing almost 20% of total European new car sales. Toyota plans to sell 101,000 Toyota Auris models in 2010 and, in 2011 - the first full year of sales with all engine variants available - 130,000 units.

Design

The Toyota Auris 2010 combines dynamic exterior design changes with extensive interior improvements in quality, materials, ergonomics, driving comfort, and visual appeal. The Toyota Auris HSD incorporates several unique styling details to improve the car's aerodynamic performance. The interior incorporates hybrid-specific instruments, switchgear and upholstery.

Exterior design: a stronger, more confident road presence

Redesigned bumpers have increased the front and rear overhangs by 15 mm and 10 mm respectively. As a result the Toyota Auris 2010 has increased in overall length by 25 mm to 4245 mm, while the long, 2600 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

With a new horizontal bar-type grille, more aggressive headlamp clusters, LED daytime running lights and a wider lower bumper air intake, the entire front of the Toyota Auris 2010 has been restyled to enhance the car's stable, ground-hugging stance and create a more youthful image.

The rear design has been strengthened to provide a stronger, more confident road presence. The bumper corners have been extended outwards and create a new 'catamaran' bumper profile which accentuates the Toyota Auris 2010's muscular proportions and wide track.

The latest addition to the model line-up, the Toyota Auris HSD incorporates several unique exterior design features which both improve the car's overall aerodynamic efficiency and indicate the presence of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain.

The upper grille opening has been optimised to help the air flow smoothly over the upper half of the body, and the size of the lower grille has been enlarged to reduce airflow resistance as well as improving engine cooling efficie

Housing a revised foglamp configuration, the flat, vertical surface of the bumper corner not only reinforces the Toyota Auris HSD's broad stance and driving stability, but also corrects airflow as it passes over the front wheels to minimise wheel arch turbulence.

Allied to a 5 mm lowering of vehicle ride height and a choice of purpose-made, 15" or 17" alloy wheels with integrated, aerodynamic caps and low rolling resistance tyres, a large, roof mounted rear spoiler further improves the Toyota Auris HSD's aerodynamic efficiency.

Acting in combination to smooth and control the flow of air over the car, these HSD-specific design modifications have reduced the Toyota hybrid's coefficient of drag from Cd 0.290 to 0.283, effecting reductions in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The Toyota Auris 2010 is available in a choice of six exterior colours, including a new, hybrid-specific Pearl White finish.

Interior design: improvements in quality, ergonomics and visual appeal

Soft touch materials now cover the top of the driver's instrument cluster and the upper glove box, and the seat upholstery has been upgraded across the range. The height of the centre console storage box has been raised by about 50 mm, and it now functions as an armrest. A new, more comfortable steering wheel incorporates redesigned audio and Bluetooth phone control switches.

The unique, bridged centre console which brings the gear lever, handbrake and instrumentation within the closest possible reach of the driver has a new, bright metallic finish matched by the door handles. The handbrake design has been revised with a new lever release button, a tactile, ergonomic grip and lower seating in the release position.

Control panel colour and finish changes have enhanced switch layout visibility, and the illumination of the Optitron meter dials has been changed to white for improved clarity and visibility.

In conjunction with the introduction of Hybrid Synergy Drive, the Toyota Auris HSD interior features several significant modifications. The driver's instrument binnacle has been revised, with the tachometer replaced by an Eco Drive Assist Monitor. The centredial information panel includes additional, Hybrid Synergy Drive- specific information such as Energy Flow and Eco Drive Result monitors.

A hybrid blue Smart Start switch has been added to the side of the instrument cluster. The centre console incorporates a Parking Control switch, EV, Eco and Power drive mode switches and a shiftby- wire transmission lever with a high-quality silver paint finish.

Toyota Auris HSD instrument and switchgear illumination has been amended to greenish white numbers on a hybrid blue background for the meter panel, audio and heating controls, and the Smart Start, Drive Mode and Parking Control switches.

A choice of hybrid-specific upholstery finishes features a standard specification, blue-flecked seat panel fabric, while high grade models are trimmed in Alcantara panels with leather surrounds.

Powertrains and driving dynamics

The Toyota Auris 2010 powertrain line-up features a choice of full hybrid drive, and three petrol and three diesel engines offering the performance- and economy-enhancing benefits of Toyota Optimal Drive. The introduction of a Hybrid Synergy Drive model makes this is the most comprehensive range of powertrains available in the C-segment, catering for every customer requirement.

As a result of Toyota Optimal Drive technology, the Toyota Auris will be the first Toyota to comply with Euro 5 emission standards across the entire European model range by July 2010.

Starting at just 118 g/km, CO2 emissions have been lowered throughout the engine range, offering significant cost of ownership benefits to fleet customers.

The introduction of the Toyota Auris HSD will create an important shift in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology. The advantages of exceptional fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions are obvious. However, the Auris HSD customer will also experience a smooth and sophisticated driving experience -unique to the C-segment- thanks to the everyday usability, driving comfort and remarkable quietness of Toyota's multiple award-winning, full hybrid powertrain.

With remarkably low 89 g/km CO2 emissions the Toyota Auris HSD plays a significant role in further reducing Toyota's whole-fleet CO2 average which, having fallen by 16 g/km between 2008 and 2009, already stands at just 130 g/km.

1.33 litre Dual VVT-i with Stop & Start system

The 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine generates 73 kW/ 99 DIN hp and maximum torque of 128 Nm at 3800 rpm, while returning an average fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of only 139 g/km.

The unit benefits from numerous Toyota Optimal Drive engine optimisations. A combination of lightweight technology, a resin cylinder head cover and intake manifold, and a remarkably compact design has effected a substantial reduction in engine weight and size. Combustion efficiency has been improved through the use of a high efficiency intake port, a high compression ratio and long reach spark plugs.

Extensive friction reduction measures include enhanced engine block rigidity and bore circularity, an improved valve roller rocker arm design with a new camshaft profile, small, lightweight pistons with a low friction coating, low viscosity oil and a water jacket spacer.

Toyota Optimal Drive's environmental technologies are represented by the application of a wide ratio 6-speed manual transmission and optional, Stop & Start System technology.

This innovative system automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stopped. The world's first permanently engaged ring gear mechanism allows for automatic engine restart within half a second when the clutch is lifted, with significant reductions in engine start noise and seat vibration levels.

Thus equipped, the 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i unit's fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are lowered still further, to just 5.9 l/100 km and 136 g/km respectively.

1.6 and 1.8 litre Valvematic petrol engines

The 1.6-litre Valvematic engine develops 132 DIN hp and classleading maximum torque of 160 Nm at only 4400 rpm. When equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, the unit returns a combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km and generates CO2 emissions of only 152 g/km. MultiMode transmission further reduces both fuel consumption and emissions, to 6.3 l/100 km and 146 g/km respectively.

The 1.8 litre Valvematic engine develops 147 DIN hp and maximum torque of 180 Nm at 4000 rpm, yet the engine's combined fuel consumption is only 6.7 l/100 km, and CO2 emissions are 155 g/km. Through the application of Toyota Optimal Drive, both engines benefit from the same lightweight technology, compact design and combustion efficiency engine optimisations as the 1.33 litre unit.

In addition, friction reduction measures include an improved valve roller rocker arm design with a new camshaft profile, small, lightweight pistons with a low friction coating, enhanced engine block rigidity and bore circularity, and low viscosity oil.

The environmental technologies of Toyota Optimal Drive are represented by the application of wide ratio 6-speed manual transmissions and an optional, MultiMode transmission available with the 1.6 litre unit.

Offering class-leading efficiency, power and torque, Valvematic is a further development of Toyota's highly successful Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (Dual VVT-i) system.

Adding lift and duration control to the variable inlet valve timing to deliver more power for less fuel consumption with reduced CO2 emissions, Valvematic also reduces friction and pumping losses under light engine loads, further lowering fuel consumption.

Diesel engines

The three diesel engines in the Toyota Auris 2010 model range also benefit from the extensive application of Toyota Optimal Drive technologies.

Lightweight technology and a compact design have resulted in a marked reduction in engine weight and size. Numerous combustion efficiency enhancing measures include a lower compression ratio, optimised combustion chamber dimensions, enhanced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler efficiency and stainless steel exhaust manifolds with close-coupled Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF).

The adoption of Piezo injectors is of particular significance. Their high speed reaction time makes multi-phase high speed injection possible. This has the effect of both lowering the rate of combustion expansion and effecting a more thorough burn within the combustion chamber, thus further reducing particulate, NOx and CO2 emissions.

The 2.2 litre engine also benefits from Toyota's Diesel-Clean Advanced Technology (Toyota D-CAT), which incorporates a Diesel Particulate and NOx Reduction filter (DPNR).

1.4 D-4D 90 diesel engine

The 1.4 litre D-4D engine develops 90 DIN hp and maximum torque of 205 Nm at only 1800 to 2800 rpm, and may be equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for CO2 emissions that are amongst the lowest in the C-segment.

When equipped with the manual transmission and a CCo, the 1.4 D-4D 90 unit returns a combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km and generates CO2 emissions of only 124 g/km. Manual versions fitted with a DPF return just 4.5 l/100 km and a remarkable 118 g/km.

This outstanding, 118 g/km CO2 emissions performance has been achieved through combining Toyota Optimal Drive with various measures designed to maximise the aerodynamic and fuel efficiency of the Toyota Auris 1.4 D-4D 90, such as lowered suspension and low rolling resistance tyres.

2.0 D-4D 125 and 2.2 D-4D 180 diesel engines

With a DPF fitted as standard, the 2.0 D-4D 125 delivers 126 DIN hp and maximum torque of 310 Nm from 1800 to 2400 rpm. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 5.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are 138 g/km.

The Toyota Auris' powerful, 2.2 litre turbodiesel further benefits from Toyota's Diesel-Clean Advanced Technology (Toyota D-CAT), which incorporates a Diesel Particulate and NOx Reduction filter (DPNR). The 2.2 D-4D 180 unit delivers 177 DIN hp and a highly impressive maximum torque of 400 Nm between 2000 and 2800 rpm. Conversely, average fuel consumption is just 5.9 l/100 km, and CO2 emissions only 154 g/km.

6-speed manual and MultiMode transmissions

Every engine in the Toyota Auris 2010 range is mated to a Toyota Optimal Drive six-speed manual transmission featuring wide-spread ratios designed to optimise fuel consumption and lower CO2.

An optional, MultiMode transmission is available on 1.6 Valvematic petrol and 1.4 D-4D 90 diesel versions. MultiMode is an automated manual transmission with a fully automatic shift mode and no clutch pedal. It offers the driver a choice of two, fully automatic gear change modes or a manual, sequential gear change with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Revised suspension and steering for an improved driving experience

Through close collaboration between Toyota's European and Japanese Research and Development teams, the implementation of regional customer feedback and extensive European testing the Toyota Auris' suspension system has been fine-tuned specifically for the customers and roads of the European market. It combines stable high speed driving performance with secure handling and superior ride comfort.

The Toyota Auris' speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) has also been revised and refined to provide better feedback and improved vehicle agility. The Toyota Auris HSD brings the extraordinarily refined, smooth and silent Hybrid Synergy Drive experience to a Toyota mainstream model customer base for the first time in Europe.

Improved equipment specifications

Every Toyota Auris 2010 model above the Terra grade now benefits from wireless, Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone connectivity -independent of the optional navigation system- allowing for incoming call sound output through the vehicle speakers. The fully integrated audio system now incorporates a mini jack USB/AUX input terminal located within the upper glovebox, allowing for the connection of MP3 players directly to the audio system.

The seat upholstery has also been upgraded, with five new finishes available for the main inserts; one woven dark grey fabric, three Tatami knitted - dark grey with grey or ruby touches with orange stitch, or greige with grey stitch, Kaze dark grey fabric, two leather - dark grey and greige - and one partial leather /Alcantara in dark grey.

Auto-levelling headlamps can be fitted with optional, HID (High Intensity Discharge) lights, and an optional rear camera with a display integrated into the driver's rear view mirror will be available at a later date.

The Toyota Auris HSD incorporates a hybrid-specific driver's instrument cluster and driving mode switchgear, and a shift-by-wire transmission lever. Toyota unveiled the all-new, third-generation Toyota Sienna minivan at a media conference at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto show. The Toyota Sienna is well known as a transportation solution for moving people and cargo comfortably and efficiently. The third-generation Toyota Sienna will look and drive more like a sedan, conform to new ideas about personal comfort, easily accommodate cargo, and handle big loads.

The 2011 Sienna has been reinvented to handle these needs as it shifts to a more expressive and dynamic vehicle with a stronger profile, high shoulder character and responsive handling. With state-of the art features and rewarding driving dynamics, it is a vehicle that car-lovers will find satisfying to drive. Toyota Sienna will offer new models, including a sporty SE and a four-cylinder powertrain, as it continues to be the only offering in the segment with an all-wheel-drive option.

The Sienna was designed by Toyota's Calty Design Research and developed at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., with assembly being accomplished at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana.


Visually Intriguing

The Toyota Sienna will come in five conveniently configured grades, all sharing a distinctly new visual direction and features. The third-generation Toyota Sienna explores a more modernly advanced and bold design. The sportier profile is complemented with distinctive window shapes. Working closely with engineering, Toyota Sienna designers were able to create a high and wide shoulder to embed a deliberately hidden door slider within the window graphic.

The strong high shoulder and distinct fender flares visually emphasize the wheels. Dimensionally, the new Toyota Sienna rides on the same wheelbase as the prior generation, but it is wider and slightly shorter overall.

In the front is a bold face design. Sophisticated headlamps angled higher than the grille lends a confident front presence. The sculptural rear corner separates the Toyota Sienna from boxy minivans as it surrounds the functional yet elegant LED taillights.

The interior features upscale quality and elegance, yet every element are logical and functional. The distinctive swept shape of the IP creates the perception of increased personal space for both driver and passenger. Careful attention to the details adds extra value to each component. Sleek seat designs add flexibility and roominess while central climate and audio controls are integrated into a single graphic element.

Overall, the new Sienna has a sportier, classier appearance. A Cd of 0.306 is the result of careful design work and is a contributing factor in maintaining a quiet cabin and providing excellent fuel economy.

Power, Plus Efficiency

A choice of two responsive DOHC engines will be available: a 3.5-liter V6 or 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. Both engines offer the latest in efficient, lightweight technology, including Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), roller rocker arms and an Acoustically Controlled Induction System (ACIS) that changes the length of the air-intake pipe to supply more torque on demand.

The 3.5-liter V6 makes 266 horsepower at 6,200 rpm, with expected EPA-estimated mileage ratings of 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway (16 mpg city/22 mpg highway on AWD models). It also has a 3,500-pound tow capacity. With 187 horsepower at 5,800 rpm, the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine produces responsive power that exceeds some competitors V6 performance, while delivering expected EPA-estimated fuel efficiency ratings of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Both engines are matched with state-of-the-art, electronically controlled six-speed transmissions with sequential shift that provide smooth gear-shift feeling, quiet performance and a lightweight, compact size.

The suspension uses front MacPherson struts, combined with rack-and pinion steering for smooth, linear steering feel. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) delivers a more solid direct on-road feel. With a wider stance, the new Toyota Sienna has a more direct steering feel. Under-body aero parts also contribute to dynamic performance.

Models and Features

The Toyota Sienna will come in five grades: Sienna grade, LE, SE, XLE and Limited. All-wheel-drive is available with the V6 on LE, XLE and Limited models.

With five distinct model choices, the new Toyota Sienna can be tailored to a wide range of purposes and pocketbooks. The Toyota Sienna can be configured with seven- or eight-passenger seating, in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, with a range of prices and features to accommodate different mixes of practical needs and high aspirations.

The Toyota Sienna and LE grades are available with either the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or the 3.5-liter V6. The value-driven Toyota Sienna grade and popular LE are equipped with an array of standard features that include: cruise control, Daytime Running Lights with manual on/off feature, tri-zone air conditioning, six- or eight-way-adjustable driver's captain's chair, power windows with auto up/down and jam protection, AM/FM CD player with four speakers, XM compatibility, auxiliary jack, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and three 12V outlets, among other amenities. The Star Safety SystemTM, which includes Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Traction Control (TRAC), is standard on all models.

The LE V6 model is upgraded with even more features including dual power-sliding doors and power rear door, a power driver seat with power lumbar support, electrochromatic rearview mirror with Homelink™, backup camera, rear window sunshades, AM/FM/MP3 CD player, integrated XM® satellite radio (subscription required), auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod® connectivity, and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology, and steering wheel audio controls. These features can be added to the four-cylinder model as a package.

The XLE builds on the LE, adding features such as leather-trimmed seats, moonroof, and an anti-theft system with engine immobilizer, remote keyless entry, and heated front seats. Select optional XLE equipment includes a 10-speaker JBL® premium sound system with voice-activated DVD Navigation and Panorama rear camera with integrated back-up guides, XM® NavTraffic (subscription required), rear-seat Dual View Entertainment system, and an auxiliary audio jack and USB port with iPod® connectivity.

The Limited is designed for customers who want all the features with more luxury. The standard equipment list is extensive, including new second-row Lounge Seating and a power 60/40 Split & Stow third-row seat, front and rear parking sonar, dual moonroof, Smart Key, and Safety Connect™. Select options include those available on the XLE plus HID auto high-beam auto-high beam headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, and Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

New Sporty SE

Given its upgraded engineering, every Toyota Sienna will ride well and track cleanly through corners, but none more so than the newest addition to the line: the sporty SE.

The SE is designed for those who appreciate an even sportier design with responsive performance. The front has a more aggressive appearance and the side skirting visually lowers the vehicle. Aerodynamic sculpting hugs the standard 19-inch alloy wheels, which are specially tuned for sportier handling. Separating the SE further from other grades, the smoked tail lamps create a visually prominent statement. The SE sits lower, on a sport-tuned suspension for quicker feedback and better handling. Additionally, the SE is built with exclusive instrumentation and unique interior colors and trim.

Comfort Remains Key

The cabin of the new Toyota Sienna represents a conceptual leap forward, blending options for more individual space, better cargo capacity, and improved group interaction.

The interior is more than two inches longer, and the seats now have longer ranges of travel, making it possible to comfortably accommodate a wider range of heights and sizes.

The front seats have more rearward travel, and the steering wheel has a less upright position, so the driver can adopt a comfortable driving posture. The driver's instruments and controls are clear and concise, and the greater cabin width helps create extended personal space for both driver and front passenger.

Numerous storage bins, cupholders and cargo spaces have been strategically placed in convenient locations. A conversation mirror, integrated into the sunglass case in the overhead console, allows visual contact with rear seat passengers.

Throughout the cabin, there is an open field of view to create an airy, roomy ambiance. With wider fields of vision rearmost passengers can see forward more easily.

Both seven- and eight-seat cabins can be configured for a full contingent of passengers, a load of cargo, or a convenient mix of both. In seven-seat cabins, the second row captain chairs slide 23 inches, moving to the rear to create legroom for the tallest passengers and easier ingress and egress. They can be moved forward close to the front seats to make it easy to care for a child passenger, while also allowing easy access for third-row passengers.

A sliding center console on the XLE all-wheel-drive and Limited grades can be shared between the front seats and second row passengers. The illuminated console slides into the second row area to provide convenient access for both rows, so the need for storage and passenger comfort can be equally served.

For even more passenger comfort, there is standard second-row lounge seating on the Limited grade, which includes leg and foot support. Second-row captain chairs on all grades have dual armrests, and a one-motion release mechanism in case the seat needs to be removed.

On eight-passenger models, the second-row center seat can be removed and stowed in the left side of the rear-storage area. When the center seat is stowed, a cupholder and storage tray is revealed. The eight-passenger interior can easily be optimized for seven passengers, and quickly reconfigured back for eight.

The second-row seats also feature a Tip Up and Long Slide feature, allowing them to slide forward and back on extended rails, making more room for people or cargo as the need arises. All second row seats, regardless of configuration, move out of the way with one touch to gain easy access to the third row seats.

The 60/40 Split and Stow third-row seating folds flat with one motion manually, with the Limited front-wheel drive receiving a power feature. The third row has been moved about two inches rearward for enhanced comfort. With the third-row seat in use, there is enough storage for five golf bags or four large suitcases. Four handy grocery hooks, with two in the back and two in the second row seatbacks, add storage convenience.

It is easier than ever to load the Toyota Sienna, thanks to wider doors and one-touch second-row seats. By sliding the second-row seats all the way to the rear, a walk-in aisle is created, making it easier to enter, exit, install a child seat, or place a child in a seat. The second-row seats can be moved all the way to the front, just behind the front row, to maximize rear cargo capacity, especially with the third-row stowed flat.

With the third row seat stowed and the second row seat removed, the cargo area is approximately eight feet long and four feet wide. The back door opening is broad and spacious, set at a height that makes loading and unloading easy.

A cabin air filter is standard along with an air-conditioning system that controls the temperature of three separate zones.

Innovative Technologies

A Toyota first rear-seat Dual View Entertainment Center is another innovative option. The system uses two displays side-by-side to create a seamless 16.4-inch widescreen image from a single source. When two separate entertainment options are called for, the system can split the screen into two individual screens, each with input from separate sources. Used as a single screen, it can be easily seen from the third row, and it can be operated from any seat via remote control. Used as two screens, the system can accommodate the preferences of two separate passengers who might want to play a video game or watch a second DVD simultaneously via auxiliary inputs.

Other technological upgrades include a Toyota-first Panorama Camera rear monitor. It provides two views behind the vehicle including a 180-degree view, and on-screen back-up guides, helping drivers to reverse out of parking spots or driveways.

Safety for All

An enhanced version of Toyota's Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) is standard on all 2011 Sienna models. VSC coordinates the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist with Traction Control (TRAC) and Electric Power Steering (EPS), to help provide a the driver a better-integrated, controlled vehicle in the event of an emergency maneuver.

A Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pre-collision seatbelt system is an available option on Limited, as is the latest in advanced vehicle control technology: Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM). The VDIM system coordinates brake control with engine output and steering inputs, allowing all the control and safety systems to cooperate seamlessly. Unlike reactive traction systems, VDIM operates proactively. During normal driving, the system works smoothly to enhance control even before the vehicle reaches its limits.

Seven airbags are standard equipment, including dual-stage front and seat-mounted side airbags for driver and front passenger, plus a new driver's side knee airbag. Side curtain airbags cover the length of the cabin, from the front seats to the third row.

The new Safety Connect™ telematics system is standard on Limited and optional on XLE. Safety Connect offers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance. A complimentary one-year trial subscription is included.

In case of airbag deployment or severe rear-end collision, Automatic Collision Notification is designed to automatically call a response center. If a response agent cannot communicate with the occupants, the agent can contact the nearest emergency-services provider to dispatch assistance.

Pushing the in-vehicle "SOS" button allows drivers to reach the response center to request help in an emergency as well as for a wide range of roadside assistance needs. If a Toyota Sienna equipped with Safety Connect is stolen, agents can work with local authorities to help locate and recover the vehicle.

The all-new 2011 Toyota Sienna will begin arriving at Toyota dealerships in February 2010.

Toyota Yaris was first launched in 1999, with an all-new, second generation model introduced in 2005 and further refinements added in 2009, the Yaris is Toyota's best selling model in Europe, positioned at the heart of this highly competitive segment.

As reflected in its consistently strong performance in the European J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction survey, an ever-increasing number of customers have come to appreciate the Toyota Yaris' ingenious packaging, class-leading passenger room coefficient, comfort and versatility, advanced technology and performance. In total, over 2.2 million units have been sold across Europe since its launch, and the Toyota Yaris represents a quarter of Toyota's annual car sales on the continent.

In 2009, Toyota Optimal Drive technology was introduced across the entire engine range. This has significantly lowered both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, with appreciable cost of ownership benefits to customers. All engines - 1.0 litre VVT-i, 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i and 1.4 litre D-4D - now generate 120 g/km or less, with fuel consumption averaging below 5 l/100 km.

Toyota Yaris 2010 introduces a new grade into a revised, streamlined model line-up which sees all engine variants available in every grade. Bringing added visual appeal to the heart of the model range, Toyota Yaris 2010 features numerous exterior styling updates, a refreshed interior and an upgraded standard equipment specification.


Manufactured at TMMF Valenciennes in France and on sale from January 2010, the new Toyota Yaris 2010 will revitalise the core of Toyota's best-selling European model, with overall range sales expected to exceed 200,000 units in 2010.

New feature model: Toyota Yaris 2010

Toyota Yaris 2010 is a new grade at the heart of the model line-up, replacing the outgoing feature model. The revised model line-up now comprises four specification levels: Base, Luna, new Toyota Yaris 2010 and Sol.

Designed to refresh the model's advanced, innovative image, and add further visual appeal to Toyota's popular B segment hatchback, Toyota Yaris 2010 benefits from several exterior updates.

It now features a more expressive, tinted headlamp cluster design, newly developed matt silver door handles, a new modern wheel cap design as well as new alloy wheels, a new rear light colour treatment and two new, grade-exclusive exterior colours; Light Purple Silver and Blue metallic.

On board, the Toyota Yaris 2010 standard equipment specification has been enhanced to include analogue instrument dials, a perforated leather steering wheel and gearshift knob, and a distinctive upholstery trim.

With automatic air-conditioning and front foglights also incorporated in the standard equipment specification, the Toyota Yaris 2010 offers a customer benefit of up to 5%.

Toyota Optimal Drive

A choice of three powerplants - 1.0 litre VVT-i and 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol units and a 1.4 litre D-4D - is now available across the entire Toyota Yaris model range. Every engine benefits from the performance - and economy-enhancing benefits of Toyota Optimal Drive and, from July, will comply with Euro V emissions standards. As a result, all three engines generate under 120 g/km, with model range fuel consumption averaging below 5 l/100 km. Moreover, Toyota Yaris whole-fleet CO2 emissions will be reduced from 130.8 g/km in 2008, to 117.4 g/km in 2010.

Designed to maximise performance and driving enjoyment while minimising fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, Toyota Optimal Drive focuses on several key aspects of powertrain development such as lightweight, compact design, enhanced combustion efficiency, low friction components and environmentally friendly technologies.

Petrol engine combustion efficiency has been improved through the use of a high efficiency intake port, a high compression ratio and long reach spark plugs. The 1.4 litre D-4D benefits from the adoption of a lower compression ratio, optimised combustion chamber dimensions, enhanced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler efficiency and a stainless steel exhaust manifold with an optional, closecoupled Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Environmental technologies are represented by the application of Dual VVT-i and Stop & Start technology to the 1.33 litre Dual VVT-i petrol unit, while the 1.4 litre D-4D engine is equipped with next generation Piezo injectors, variable nozzle turbocharging, a de-coupling generator and new, electrical Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
